Training & Application Process

Idaho law requires all persons seeking licensure to provide documented proof of meeting the training requirements. The training requirements necessary to obtain a license to practice cosmetology, nail technology, esthetics, or electrology in the State of Idaho are outlined below. (If you are licensed in another state, please return to the Licensure Application Process.)

Licensure Requirements

All categories of licensure require the applicant to:

Be no less than sixteen and one-half (16 1/2) years of age
Have completed at least two (2) years of high school education or its equivalent.
Successfully pass the NIC Theory and Practical examinations.

Cosmetology:

Completion and graduation from 2,000 hour course of instruction from a school of cosmetology, or a 4,000 hour course of instruction as an apprentice.

Nail Technology:

Completion and graduation from 400 hour course of instruction from a school of cosmetology, or a 800 hour course of instruction as an apprentice.

Haircutter:

Completion and graduation from 900 hour course of instruction from a school of cosmetology.

Esthetics:

Completion and graduation from 600 hour course of instruction from a school of cosmetology, or a 1,200 hour course of instruction as an apprentice.

Electrology:

Completion and graduation from 800 hour course of instruction from a school of cosmetology, or a 1,600 hour course of instruction as an apprentice.

You may download the applications to register as an Apprentice, or request the application from the Bureau office.

Permits to temporarily demonstrate or teach cosmetology outside of licensed facilities are also available.
